What the trust line means

Some photo pages carry a short line about where the file came from. It tells you exactly what we can prove, and no more.

Traced from the moment of capture

The photo was taken with the LensOne app. The phone computed a fingerprint of the file the instant it was taken, and the file we received matched it exactly. Nothing was swapped or altered on the way to us.

Unchanged since it reached us

We recorded a fingerprint of the original file when it arrived. The original you would license is the same file, byte for byte. We cannot vouch for what happened before it reached us.

Edited by the desk

When our desk corrects or crops a photo, the page says so with the date. The original is always kept untouched.

What it does not mean

A fingerprint proves the file was not changed. It does not prove the scene is real or that the caption is complete. Those rest on our photographers and our editors, and on the standards in About us.
